A Call For Curatorial Propositions From Galleries, Arts Organisations, Curators, Artist/curators And Visual Arts Collectives
Wales At Venice 2011

Arts Council of Wales is delighted to confirm that Wales will be participating at the 54th International Art Exhibition Venice Biennale in 2011. Wales at Venice is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government and is a key part of the strategy for the visual arts in Wales.
Wales at Venice will be in its 5th Biennale year in 2011. Previous artists representing Wales include, John Cale, Richard Deacon, Merlin James, Heather & Ivan Morison, Peter Finnemore, Bethan Huws, Cerith Wynn Evans (see www.walesvenicebiennale.org ) The Biennale enhanced these artists’ international profile and has showcased outstanding work from Wales.
This opportunity remains the prime international context for contemporary art and raises Wales’ cultural profile as a place for many emerging and highly respected artists.
With a variety of approaches taken to date, Arts Council of Wales is now seeking to open out the possibilities for our next presence, as it responds to the on-going shifts for presenting contemporary art.
In the past, artists have been chosen to represent Wales by a commissioner and curator working with a committee. However for 2011, we feel it would be more exciting and rewarding to call for submissions and ideas from our visual arts community.
It is vital that this international platform is maximised, that the presentation speaks of contemporary Wales and that it connects in artistic terms with other curated exhibitions and presentations at the Biennale. In essence it needs to continue to build the focus on contemporary art from and within Wales.
This is a call to galleries, arts organisations, curators, artist/curators and collectives with a proven track record of working internationally or delivering respected international presentations of contemporary art. Interested parties should be based in Wales or have a connection/awareness of Welsh contemporary visual arts practice.
To prepare for Venice in 2011, Arts Council of Wales is initiating the following process:
1. Invite exploratory propositions through this call. (March-April 2010)
2. The Venice Advisory Committee will evaluate these propositions. (April 2010)
3. Offer a short development phase supported by a fee to a maximum of three propositions, (April- May)
4. Make a final selection, before constituting and financing the partnership team and artist(s) to create the exhibition. (May-June 2010)
Reports at the various stages will be posted on the Arts Council of Wales website and the Wales at Venice website.
In addition to realising the exhibition at the Biennale, the partnership will need to actively contribute towards a strong education programme, audience development initiatives and raising the profile on an international stage of high quality visual arts practice in Wales.

Mae Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru yn falch i gadarnhau bydd Cymru yn cymryd rhan yn 2011 yn Venice Biennale rhif 54, yr arddangosfa gelf ryngwladol. Cefnogir Cymru yn Fenis sy’n rhan allweddol o’r strategaeth ar gyfer y celfyddydau gweledol yng Nghymru gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru.
Bydd Cymru yn Fenis yn cymryd rhan ym mhumed flwyddyn y Biennale yn 2011. Mae artistiaid a gynrychiolai Gymru yn y gorffennol yn cynnwys John Cale, Richard Deacon, Merlin James, Heather ac Ivan Morison, Peter Finnemore, Bethan Huws a Cerith Wynn Evans (gweler www.walesvenicebiennale.org ). Cododd y Biennale broffil rhyngwladol yr artistiaid hyn a bu’n gyfle i arddangos gwaith rhagorol o Gymru.
Hwn o hyd yw’r prif gyd-destun rhyngwladol ar gyfer celf gyfoes ac mae’n codi proffil diwylliannol Cymru fel lle sy’n magu llawer o artistiaid enwog a rhai sy’n ennill eu plwyf.
Wedi mynd ati mewn gwahanol ffyrdd yn y gorffennol, erbyn hyn mae Cyngor y Celfyddydau yn ceisio lledu’r posibiliadau ar gyfer ein presenoldeb nesaf wrth ymateb i’r newidiadau parhaus mewn cyflwyno celf gyfoes.
Yn y gorffennol dewiswyd artistiaid i gynrychioli Cymru gan gomisiynydd a churadur a weithiai gyda phwyllgor. Ond ar gyfer 2011, teimlwn byddai’n fwy cyffrous a boddhaus i alw am gyflwyniadau a syniadau oddi wrth gymuned y celfyddydau gweledol.
Mae’n hanfodol gwneud y gorau o’r llwyfan ryngwladol, bod y cyflwyniad yn trafod y Gymru gyfoes a’i fod yn cysylltu mewn termau artistig ag arddangosfeydd a chyflwyniadau eraill sydd yn y Biennale. Yn ei hanfod mae angen iddo gynyddu’r ffocws ar gelfyddyd Cymru.
Dyma alw ar orielau, sefydliadau celfyddydol, curaduron, artistiaid/curaduron a mentrau cydweithredol gyda hanes llwyddiannus o weithio’n rhyngwladol neu ddarparu cyflwyniadau rhyngwladol o gelf gyfoes o fri. Dylai pawb sydd â diddordeb fod wedi’i leoli yng Nghymru neu feddu ar gysylltiad/ymwybyddiaeth o arfer cyfredol ym maes y celfyddydau gweledol yng Nghymru.
I baratoi at Fenis yn 2011, bydd y Cyngor yn dechrau’r broses ganlynol:
1. Gwahodd cynigion archwiliol drwy’r alwad hon (Mawrth-Ebrill 2010)
2. Bydd Pwyllgor Ymgynghorol Fenis yn gwerthuso’r cynigion (Ebrill 2010)
3. Cynnig cyfnod datblygu byr a ategir gan ffi ar gyfer hyd at fwyafswm o dri chynnig (Ebrill- Mai)
4. Dewis yn derfynol cyn ffurfio ac ariannu tîm partneriaeth ac artist(iaid) i greu’r arddangosfa (Mai-Mehefin 2010)
Rhoddir adroddiadau’r gwahanol gamau ar wefan y Cyngor ac un Cymru yn Fenis.
Bydd ar y bartneriaeth angen cyfrannu’n weithredol at raglen addysg gref, mentrau datblygu cynulleidfaoedd a chodi proffil arfer safonol y celfyddydau yng Nghymru ar lwyfan ryngwladol yn ogystal â chreu’r arddangosfa yn y Biennale.
